WILD AGARWOOD ∙ The Tides of Time and Fragrance with SSLK Scent
Sitting by the window today, listening to the soft, rhythmic tapping of raindrops against the glass. In the quiet of the room, a delicate thread of smoke ribbons upward, slowly diffusing into the air, carrying whispers of ancient forests and forgotten eras.
There is a rare kind of gratitude that comes from a shared journey over time. I have had the immense honor of continuing my long term collaboration with SSLK Scent, diving deeper into their wild agarwood collection. It is one of those rare creative spaces where I feel deeply trusted, and with each project, I find myself learning a little more about the earth, and perhaps, a little more about myself.
The Aquilaria tree, native to the dense, humid tropical forests of Southeast Asia and Oceania, only yields this specific aromatic profile under rare and specific conditions. When the tree is fractured, it infuses with a fascinating mechanism of healing, slowly secreting a dense, volatile oleoresin that saturates the porous heartwood over decades. Over time, it becomes deeply fragrant and rich, darkening and enriching the wood to give rise to a highly complex olfactory profile characterized by deep balsamic gravity, warm animalic undertones, and sweet, woody smoke.
The Devotion to the Craft
What I deeply admire about Tan Rao, the founder of SSLK, is her unwavering refusal to compromise. Her approach is guided by a profound reverence for the material and a fierce passion for preserving heritage in its purest form. For over a decade, SSLK master perfumers have studied resinization patterns, tracking how microclimatic variations across different altitudes affect the development of the wood. Their process relies on identifying and sourcing naturally weathered fragments from cliffs, ravines, and forest floors.
There is a profound beauty in the way these pieces are brought to life. This collection holds only the raw, wild agarwood itself, sourced entirely from the wild and gathered gently by hand. Because the wood is shaped purely by the elements, the aroma carries a deep, lived-in richness that shifts naturally depending on the exact conditions of the forest environment.
Mountain grown wood carries a cooling, airy profile that breathes of high peaks.
Lowland forests yield warmer, rounded aromas that embrace you like a shadow.
Wood aged in soil develops a deep, earthen gravity rooted in the dark.
Material weathered by water reveals smoother, clearer tones washed by the tides of rivers.
Sourced entirely from the wild, no two fragments are identical. Some have rested beneath riverbeds for decades, infusing with resin until they are heavy with history, making the final olfactory experience completely unrepeatable.
An Invitation to Stillness
This project is a grounded tribute to a sacred material, and to the ancient rituals of devotion that allow us to perfect our focus and sharpen the mind. These pieces were designed and crafted to be experienced, felt, and cherished. I find myself returning to these tranquil, immersive moments and the centuries old heritage, a nod that is present and reimagined, introduced beautifully into our modern life. Scent was once a sacred ritual, an essential thread woven through the fabric of history. Across many cultures, incense burning has been deeply rooted for entirely different reasons, serving as a bridge to the divine, a medicine for the mind, or a marker of passing time.
The olfactive experience here feels entirely unique. These incense sticks by SSLK are incredibly delicate, crafted with only fragrant, essential materials so that the smoke itself remains exceptionally gentle, while the smell is incredibly rich. Outside, the crisp, rainy air of the springtime holds its own heavy texture.
A warm and deep thank you to the team at SSLK and Lora at RNR Creative for trusting me with this creative vision. Crafting these stills has been an incredibly meditative and beautiful process and my passion for the world of fragrance only continues to grow stronger. It is an immense honor to create alongside hands that hold such a deep reverence for the craft.
